The ancient ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s UNESCO World Heritage site
The fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou is one of Morocco’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Located on the former caravan route between the Sahara Desert and Marrakech, this ksar (fortified village) is a stunning example of traditional southern Moroccan earthen clay architecture.
With its high defensive walls, narrow alleys, and beautifully preserved kasbahs, Ait Ben Haddou feels like stepping back in time. It has also gained international fame as a filming location for movies and series such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.
Ait Ben Haddou is more than just a filming location — it is a symbol of Morocco’s history as a crossroads of trade, culture, and architecture. For centuries, caravans carrying salt, gold, and spices passed through here, leaving behind a unique legacy. Today, the ksar stands as one of Morocco’s best-preserved examples of traditional pre-Saharan architecture.
