Culture: What to wear

HOT TIP: When the weather is very hot, it can actually feel cooler to have your legs and arms covered, and it protects your skin from sun damage. Make sure you take a scarf or hat to protect your head when out in the sun.

Imagine how you would feel if someone came to visit your house, or was sitting next to you in a restaurant, wearing only their underwear! You might feel quite embarrassed and uncomfortable... Moroccans have a very conservative dress sense, especially in the mountains and desert, and they consider garments like shorts, short-sleeved T-shirts and vests to be underwear. This applies to men as well as women.

People are unlikely to be rude to you if you dress in a more revealing Western style, but both men and women may find that they are made more welcome and treated with greater respect if they wear longer sleeves and full-length trousers or skirts.
