Culture: Moroccan tea

Dades, Berber tea, Morocco Feb 09

Nothing gets done in a hurry here, so it’s best to go with the flow and revel in the slower pace of life. In particular, drinking tea together is a ritual of hospitality and friendship in Morocco, and you will often find yourself invited to partake of a glass or two.

These can be some of the most precious moments on your journey, where local people relax with you and you can relax with them. Moroccans often want to discuss world affairs and hear about a Western point of view, or explain theirs to you.

Mint tea is a favourite, served sweet and hot, and poured from a great height to ensure it has froth on the top: ‘A glass of tea without froth is like a Berber without a turban’, as they say! It is often jokingly referred to as ‘Berber Whisky’.
