Culture: Moroccan culture
Moroccan culture is very diverse, with different traditions and influences, especially from the Arab world and from Africa as a whole.
Most of those living in the mountain and desert regions of Morocco are Berbers. Berber philosophy is one of human beings in harmony with nature. Berbers are extremely hospitable people, and we have often been touched by their generosity and kindness. They also have a strong sense of humour, and love to swap jokes, riddles and funny stories.
Men and women tend to lead very separate lives in Morocco, especially beyond the confines of the immediate family. They will often eat in separate rooms or at separate tables in the family home. This can feel very unfamiliar to Westerners. But Helen has also enjoyed many happy times in women-only spaces – learning to cook, going to the hammam, having hands or feet decorated with henna, making music and dancing.
